New York City Mayor Bloomberg is limiting the amount of soda people consume in one sitting. Well, he’s trying to. Bloomberg has elicited an rainbow of emotions when he announced his plan to fight obesity by prohibiting the sale of sugary drinks larger than 16 fluid ounces at NYC eateries and food carts. While soda lovers are outraged and complain of an infringement on their rights, I think creating a maximum size limit on soda is the perfect catalyst to the wake-up call Americans need regarding the amount of junk we put into our bodies in one sitting.
Regular soda is a sugar-infused liquid drug, one hundred percent devoid of any nutritional benefit. Considering overconsumption of sugar is directly related to obesity, diabetes, and other life-threatening diseases, (facts and figures included in the Mayors Task Force on Obesity), I think it’s a blessing that Bloomberg is creating conscious consumers when it comes to serving sizes of sugar-loaded beverages.
Putting a size cap on your cup of crack cultivates an awareness which is fundamental to changing habits and behaviors. That awareness gets people in the habit of not just consuming more because it is readily available, but rather focusing on serving sizes. Over time, people will forget about the super size and be used to what could become a regular sized serving.
